Virgin Series

The Virgin series is an exploration of the cultural and religions implications that come with the meaning of this word. Virgin is commonly defined as a person who has never had sex, and yet once upon a time it was meant to describe a free woman – independent, autonomous, untied.

The interplay of color schemes and similar shapes associated with the Virgin Mary and the anatomical references to aspects of the female reproductive system serve to further push at the tension between these two divergent definitions. The framing of the beaded piece in an embroidery hoop further serves to explore the cultural identity of women and how craft was used as an act of oppression and then later served as an act of rebellion through the embroidery of secret messages using shapes and imagery.

Original art work and giclée reproductions can be found in my store. Private commissions are also welcome.
